The Gamakatsu B10S Stinger is a premium fly-tying hook that has become a favorite among freshwater and saltwater fly anglers for its strength, sharpness, and versatility. Originally designed for tying bass bugs, the B10S has a short shank, wide gap, and straight eye, making it excellent for streamers, poppers, deer hair bugs, divers, and even smaller saltwater patterns. It’s made from high-carbon steel with Gamakatsu’s signature razor-sharp chemically sharpened point, ensuring solid hook sets and long-lasting sharpness. The hook features a black nickel finish for durability and corrosion resistance, and it’s built with enough strength to handle tough fish like bass, pike, carp, and even inshore saltwater species.
Common Sizes
-
#2/0 – #1/0 → Larger bass bugs, deer hair divers, saltwater baitfish, poppers.
-
#2 – #4 → General-purpose bass and trout streamers, carp flies, woolly buggers, Clousers.
-
#6 – #8 → Smaller streamers, nymphs, dry fly bass bugs, panfish flies, and some trout streamers.
Typical Fly Patterns
-
Bass Flies: Deer hair poppers, divers, frogs, sliders, and baitfish imitations.
-
Streamers: Zonkers, Woolly Buggers, Clouser Minnows, articulated patterns.
-
Carp Flies: Crawfish patterns, hybrids, and nymph-style carp bugs.
-
Saltwater Flies: Small baitfish (sand eel, glass minnow, peanut bunker), shrimp patterns.
-
Warmwater Flies: Panfish poppers, leech patterns, damsel/dragonfly nymphs.
Because of its wide gap and stout wire, the B10S is excellent for patterns that need room for bulky materials (like deer hair or craft fur) while still maintaining a strong hook hold on larger fish.
Some tiers even consider it a “do-it-all” hook for warmwater and crossover saltwater fishing.
